How many of you have started this year with some workouts? Well, I reckon for myself, at 36 this year, I better start working on getting my health back.
Gone were the days when we were in our teens or even in our twenties when our metabolism rate was charging up as fast as a Lamborghini on a racetrack. Unfortunately, we have to admit that in our thirties, things starts to get a little more slow...
So, I read up quite a bit about the benefits of exercising for the well-being of our mental health, and since then, I've pretty much started my gym routine in late November 2022, I knew and I told myself that if I were to carry on procrastinating, or tell myself that I'll start in 2023, the workouts wouldn't even begin.
There it is, my first photo taken on the 28th of November 2022 in the gym with a bulging stomach and muscles that were possible hidden beneath my ever-growing fats.
Change is the only thing constant...
Indeed, I told myself, it is time for a change. A change not only in my physical appearance, but also my health and my inner soul. I started heading to the gym on alternate days, ending it with a 2 - 3km walk at my estate. I told myself, the only way I'll be able to improve on my personal well-being, is to get started.
7th January 2023
A firmer decision was made, i headed to the gym across my estate, toured the gym, didn't hesitate one bit, and signed up for the membership. I've never had a gym membership since young, in fact, this is the first commitment I am making in 2023.
Though many would ask, why sign-up for a gym membership when I have a gym at the comfort of my condominium? Well, firstly, the gym at my place is extremely small, as you can see from the picture above, that's pretty much the entire set-up of the gym at my place. Pathetic isn't it?
Jokes aside, the reason why I even decided to sign-up for the gym was because everyone who's headed there are pretty much people who have a desire or an interest in fitness, and I guess that I could do with some positive vibes from the people working out at the gym. More importantly, my motivation for cardio is close to zero, and I reckon that the classes held at the gym would make me more motivated to get my cardio workout sorted.
My first gym session in Fitness First (gym)
After reading some of the articles online, I decided to do a combination of strength training and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
Guess what?! I literally crashed halfway through the HIIT class.
I happen to be working on my upper body muscle group today in the gym, mainly chest and arms for an hour before a 5 minutes rest and I ended it off with the HIIT class as recommended by some of the writers in the article... I probably should say that this ain't for the faint hearted. My instructor was really kind to be looking out for me and as hard as I tried to push myself, I couldn't go on anymore...
20 minutes into the class, I walked out feeling giddy and nauseous.
Rested for about 15 minutes at the lounge where I tried to get my senses back.. it was a feeling as if I was going to blackout.
It's not easy to get started, but it's even harder to be consistent...
As the title states, now that I've started on my fitness journey, the challenge is for me to keep its consistency. So if you're here and you see this, join me on my journey or a feedback on your thoughts on mental health and how we can all work together on this journey to recovery. Looking forward to hear from you!
